Grass Fire Threatens Corowa: Homes Saved as Firefighters Act Swiftly

UPDATE: Residents of Corowa narrowly escaped disaster as a fast-moving grass fire threatened homes but ultimately resulted in no losses. The fire, ignited around 3:30 PM on November 27, quickly escalated, prompting urgent responses from emergency services.

Firefighters from multiple agencies, totaling around 110 personnel, rushed to the scene on Hudson Road. The situation was dire as strong wind gusts fueled the flames, leading officials to issue warnings to residents. Aerial support, including a Hercules waterbomber, was deployed to combat the blaze.

By 6:00 PM, firefighters successfully contained the fire, covering a total area of 542 hectares. “It was one of those days we don’t want to see too many of,” stated Rural Fire Service Superintendent Tom McDevitt. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that the fire was initially expected to have a significant impact on Corowa.

As the fire intensified, authorities acted swiftly, issuing an emergency warning to residents, particularly those north of Honour Avenue. “We were fortunate that the fire ran into some dry land and greener canola, which helped us gain the upper hand,” McDevitt explained.

Despite the serious threat, there were no reported losses of homes or livestock, a testament to the preparedness of the community. “The exceptional work by our firefighters under atrocious weather conditions made a significant difference,” McDevitt added. He highlighted the importance of community response and proactive measures taken by residents to protect their properties.

As of now, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, with no early indications of its origin reported. McDevitt warned that the region is experiencing drought conditions, leading to depleted soil moisture levels. “This is an early start to the fire season, and we have a long way to go,” he cautioned.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant as conditions may worsen. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely. The community’s preparedness and the rapid response of firefighting teams have thus far prevented what could have been a devastating outcome.
