Boat Capsizes in Nigeria, 25 Dead and 14 Missing in Yobe State

URGENT UPDATE: A tragic boat capsized in Yobe State, Nigeria last night, resulting in 25 fatalities and leaving 14 individuals missing, according to the Yobe Emergency Management Agency. The incident occurred along the Yobe River in Garbi town as the vessel was transporting residents heading to a local market, as well as fishermen and farmers.

Emergency services reported that out of the 52 passengers on board, only 13 were rescued and are currently receiving much-needed medical assistance. Authorities are emphasizing that search and rescue operations are actively ongoing, involving local security agencies, emergency responders, and community volunteers working tirelessly to locate the missing passengers and recover bodies.

The boat reportedly overturned mid-journey, but further details have not yet been disclosed. Boat accidents are a significant concern in Nigeria, with hundreds of lives lost annually, particularly in remote areas where water transportation is often the only viable option for many residents due to poor road infrastructure.

In a similar tragedy, at least 30 people died in a boat capsizing incident last September, followed by another accident in July that claimed 25 lives. These incidents are frequently attributed to overloaded and poorly maintained vessels, many of which operate without essential safety gear like life jackets.

Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has expressed his condolences to the families affected by this latest disaster. He has directed that all necessary medical and logistical support be provided immediately to those receiving treatment.

As search efforts continue, the community and officials remain hopeful for the safe recovery of those still unaccounted for. The situation is developing, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
