Twin Brothers Attacked in Machete Ambush After Online Feud

URGENT UPDATE: A shocking machete ambush in Caroline Springs, Melbourne, has left one teenager with life-altering injuries and his twin brother fleeing into a lake for safety. The attack occurred on December 30, 2023, after an online argument escalated into violence, according to police reports.

The twins, both aged 15, were reportedly lured to a park off Garretty Road by a social media post suggesting a one-on-one fight. Instead, they were quickly surrounded by a group of 11 boys, with one brandishing a “zombie killer” machete. Senior Constable Daniel Rankin described the incident as a cowardly attack that has left both boys traumatized.

Police responded within minutes, but the attackers fled the scene. One of the twins sustained severe injuries, including multiple lacerations to his arm and back, and a head stomp that may require extensive recovery. His brother, in a desperate bid to escape, jumped into a nearby lake. “It’s a traumatic event that’s going to leave a lasting impression on his life,” said Sen Const Rankin.

Authorities are currently analyzing CCTV footage of a group of boys aged between 15 and 18, who were seen walking through Caroline Springs shortly before the incident. Investigators believe the assailants arrived in a black Ford Ranger ute with false number plates, which was left parked on Boathouse Drive. The vehicle was recorded leaving the area shortly after the attack.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of knife crime in Victoria, where police seized over 15,000 knives, machetes, and zombie knives in 2023 alone. Alarming statistics reveal that incidents involving machetes have tripled from 2021 to 2024, with young males involved in nearly 40% of these cases, according to data from the Crime Statistics Agency.

The recent increase in youth knife crime has reignited discussions about safety and prevention. Paul Burke, chief executive of the Les Twentyman Foundation, emphasized the need for early intervention to curb youth violence. “For young people, an online argument isn’t virtual. It’s personal, it’s emotional, and it’s very real,” Burke stated.

This attack follows a tragic incident in September, where two young boys were fatally stabbed in a similar ambush, prompting further scrutiny of youth gang violence in the region. Following that incident, eight teenagers have been charged.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the recent machete attack or the group involved to come forward. This alarming trend of youth violence underscores the urgent need for community-focused initiatives, such as Victoria’s new Violence Reduction Unit, aimed at preventing such incidents from occurring in the future.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as authorities continue their investigation into the machete ambush that has shocked the community.
