Mines Minister David Michael Champions WA’s Mining Sector

Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael fronted the media during the 2024 Diggers & Dealers Mining Forum.

David Michael, the Mines Minister of Western Australia, addressed the Diggers & Dealers Mining Forum on August 7, 2023, to reaffirm the Cook Government’s commitment to the mining sector. This annual event in Kalgoorlie serves as a platform for industry leaders to discuss the future of mining in the region, which plays a pivotal role in the state’s economy.

During his speech, Minister Michael highlighted the significant contributions of the mining sector to Western Australia’s economic landscape. He noted that the sector not only generates substantial revenue but also creates thousands of jobs, essential for the local communities. “The mining industry is the backbone of our economy,” he stated, underscoring the government’s dedication to supporting sustainable practices and technological advancements within the industry.

The minister’s remarks come at a time when the mining sector is facing various challenges, including environmental concerns and fluctuating global demand. In response, the Cook Government is focusing on policies that promote responsible mining while ensuring economic growth. Michael emphasized the need for collaboration between the government and the mining industry to address these challenges effectively.

Western Australia has long been recognized for its rich mineral resources, contributing significantly to both the state’s and the nation’s export revenues. The recent surge in demand for materials essential for renewable energy technologies has further spotlighted the sector. According to the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, the state’s mining industry generated over $250 billion in revenue in the last fiscal year, marking a historic high.

As the forum continues, industry leaders are expected to discuss emerging trends and innovations. Topics likely to be highlighted include advancements in extraction technologies, the importance of environmental stewardship, and the future workforce required to meet the industry’s evolving demands.

Minister David Michael’s presence at this significant event reinforces the government’s strategy to advocate for the mining sector while balancing the need for environmental sustainability. His commitment resonates with many in attendance, as the mining industry remains a cornerstone of Western Australia’s economic framework.

The Diggers & Dealers forum is not only a networking opportunity but also a chance for stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue about the future of mining. As the sector navigates its path forward, the Cook Government’s support is likely to play a crucial role in its continued success.
