Search for Missing Tasmanian Couple and Plane Enters Second Week

The search continues for a couple from northern Tasmania, who have been missing since their light plane took off from George Town Airport almost two weeks ago. Pilot Gregory Vaughan, 72, his partner Kim Warner, 66, and their dog Molly vanished on August 2, 2023, during a flight bound for central New South Wales. Despite extensive efforts, authorities have yet to find any trace of the missing individuals or their bright green, two-seater Bristell S-LSA aircraft.

The couple departed George Town around 12:45 PM but did not arrive at their destination. Gregory Vaughan, an experienced pilot, purchased the aircraft “three or four months ago,” according to the George Town Airport Association president, David Brewster. The plane’s transponder was not tracked during the flight, complicating search efforts.

Search Operations Under Challenging Conditions

The disappearance of Gregory Vaughan, Kim Warner, and Molly has raised questions about the capabilities of modern search and rescue operations in 2023. Tasmania Police noted that challenging weather conditions initially hindered search efforts. However, improved weather on Thursday allowed helicopters to conduct sweeps over Tasmania’s north-east coast and the Furneaux group of islands, including Flinders Island.

Using “drift modelling,” authorities have determined the potential search area. Inspector Craig Fox of Tasmania Police reported that the helicopter sweeps have not revealed any wreckage or debris that could provide clues about the aircraft’s whereabouts. Inspector Fox emphasized that search operations would be reviewed daily, and no decision has been made to suspend the search.

Public Appeal for Information

As the search continues, police are urging anyone with information that could assist in locating the couple or the aircraft to come forward. Individuals who have seen a plane matching the description or noticed any unusual debris or wreckage, either on land or in the water, are encouraged to contact Tasmania Police.

The ongoing search highlights the challenges faced by search and rescue teams in locating missing aircraft, especially in remote areas. As the community remains hopeful for a positive outcome, many are left wondering how a plane can disappear without a trace in today’s world.
