The National Capital Authority is moving forward with plans to construct a new aquatic centre at Commonwealth Park in Canberra, set to replace the existing Canberra Olympic Pool. Residents are encouraged to participate in a consultation period that runs until November 14, 2024, to voice their preferences for the facility’s features.
The proposed aquatic centre, situated near Lake Burley Griffin, is expected to include a combination of indoor and outdoor pools, children’s splash areas, and various recreational facilities. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr emphasized the importance of community input, stating, “The new centre will be designed to welcome as wide a range of users as possible within the project budget.” He urged Canberrans to share their ideas on essential features, highlighting that public feedback will significantly influence the design and functionality of the centre.
The ACT government has already committed $137.8 million towards planning and delivering the aquatic centre, with a substantial contribution from the federal government. As part of a pre-election pledge, the Albanese government announced a $100 million investment, which will be matched by the ACT government. This financial backing demonstrates a joint commitment to enhancing community infrastructure.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
ACT Senator Katy Gallagher encouraged residents and community groups to participate actively in the consultation process. “This is a big investment in the future of our city and will deliver a brand new aquatic centre in a central location,” she remarked. Gallagher noted that the project would also facilitate the development of the new National Convention Centre precinct by freeing up land in the area.
The consultation period not only invites input from individual citizens but also from sporting organizations and community groups. The ACT government aims to gather diverse perspectives on the desired amenities, ensuring that the aquatic centre meets the expectations of the Canberra community. Feedback will be collected through the ACT government website and at various pop-up information stalls throughout the consultation window.
In addition to the aquatic centre, the ACT government has unveiled plans for a new 2000-seat Civic theatre located at the corner of Vernon Circle and Northbourne Avenue. These developments are part of a broader initiative to revitalize the area around Commonwealth Park, which includes a year-round Floriade garden and enhancements to Stage 88.
While a specific timeline for the aquatic centre’s construction has yet to be established, it is anticipated that work will commence during the current parliamentary term. The ACT government remains focused on delivering modern and inclusive recreational facilities that cater to the needs of all residents.
As the consultation period gets underway, Canberrans are encouraged to engage with the planning process and contribute their ideas, ensuring that the new aquatic centre reflects the aspirations and needs of the community for years to come.
