SingPost Introduces Affordable U.S. Shipping for Retail Customers

Singapore Post Limited, commonly known as SingPost, is set to launch its new shipping solution, Speedpost Direct International (Retail), on September 15, 2025. This service allows retail customers to send packages to the United States while complying with updated import regulations. The initiative comes in response to recent changes in U.S. customs policies, which eliminated the de minimis exemption for shipments valued under US$800, now requiring all commercial items to be subject to duties and taxes.

Speedpost Direct International (Retail) aims to provide a transparent and straightforward shipping process. Retail customers can select between two standard packaging options: a flat envelope or a box, both offered by SingPost at fixed rates. Specifically, the service charges S$29 for items up to 0.5 kilograms in the envelope and S$69 for packages up to 2 kilograms in the box. Each shipment must have a declared value not exceeding US$100.

According to Neo Su Yin, Group Chief Operating Officer at SingPost, the main advantage of this service is its clarity for customers. “Our post office staff will assist customers in calculating and collecting all necessary duties and taxes upfront, eliminating the surprise of unexpected fees for the recipient. This provides a hassle-free experience from start to finish,” she stated.

Streamlined Process for Retail Customers

The new service is designed to cover over 80 percent of typical shipment sizes for customers sending parcels to the U.S. Individuals with more varied shipping needs may benefit from establishing a corporate account, granting them access to dedicated account managers who can assist with different shipment sizes through Speedpost Direct International.

For packages exceeding 2 kilograms or valued over US$100, customers are advised to utilize the premium Speedpost Express International service, which offers express delivery to the U.S. within 3-6 days. In contrast, the more economical Speedpost Direct International service provides delivery within 8 days.

To ensure a smooth experience at the post office, customers using the new service should prepare specific information, including the item(s) for shipment, the country of origin, the Harmonised System (HS) Code, and the recipient’s complete details. The HS Code is a universal classification for products and is now mandatory for customs clearance.

Background on U.S. Regulatory Changes

The launch of Speedpost Direct International (Retail) follows a significant update in U.S. customs policy. On August 29, 2025, the U.S. government suspended the de minimis exemption, which previously allowed most international shipments valued under US$800 to enter the country without incurring duties or taxes. This alteration subjects all commercial items to stringent scrutiny, necessitating a reliable shipping alternative for customers.

In light of these changes, SingPost has proactively suspended standard postal services for commercial items to the U.S., introducing the Speedpost Direct International service as a compliant and dependable option.

Founded in 1858, Singapore Post has grown into a leading postal and eCommerce logistics provider in the Asia Pacific region. The company serves customers in over 220 global destinations and employs approximately 3,000 staff across 14 markets. SingPost continues to innovate, delivering integrated logistics solutions while considering both customer needs and environmental impact. For more information, visit www.singpost.com.
