TotalEnergies has confirmed its plans for the second phase of the Absheron gas and condensate field in Azerbaijan, with first gas expected to flow on September 1, 2029. The announcement was made during the company’s environmental impact assessment, detailing the expansion of the Absheron Full Field Development Project. This project aims to enhance production capacity by introducing three subsea wells and a 143-kilometre (89 miles) multiphase production pipeline that will transport raw well fluids to an onshore Central Processing Facility (CPF) located southwest of the BP Sangachal Terminal.
The CPF will play a vital role in processing the gas and liquid phases, ensuring that the gas meets the entry specifications for the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP). With an export capacity designed for 450 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas and 38,000 barrels per day of unstabilized condensate, the facility will facilitate exports to both the SCP and Azerbaijan’s Domestic Gas Network (DGN), according to TotalEnergies.
In its statement, the company noted that following the completion of both onshore and offshore construction activities, the anticipated timeline for the first gas production aligns with the project schedule.
Significance Amidst Global Market Changes
Azerbaijan’s natural gas production is increasingly critical to global markets, especially as the region faces heightened geopolitical tensions. The recent decision by Qatar to reduce production at the world’s largest LNG complex in Ras Laffan, combined with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, has intensified the focus on alternative gas supplies. Last year, Azerbaijan recorded a 2.4% increase in natural gas production, contributing significantly to European energy supplies. The Shah Deniz field alone produced 27.9 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas, while the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) fields added 14.1 bcm. The Absheron field contributed 1.6 bcm, and the state energy company, SOCAR, was responsible for 7.9 bcm of total gas production, as reported by the Azeri Ministry of Energy earlier this year.
