Caulfield Junior College (CJC) introduced an impressive new mural in its library on June 23, 2023, designed to honor the diverse cultural backgrounds of its students. The mural, created by artist Shannon Lamden of “Hey, Nice Murals,” features vibrant designs influenced by contributions from the students themselves, alongside motifs representing Australian, French, and Jewish cultures.
Collaborating closely with CJC librarian Lisa Hermelin, Lamden aimed to create a piece that would resonate with both students and staff. Speaking about her vision, she remarked, “I really wanted to make something bright and fun that the kids and the teachers would come in and enjoy.”
CJC serves a student body of approximately 545, including around 130 Jewish students. To foster inclusivity, the mural prominently displays the Hebrew word “Shalom,” which translates to peace, hello, and goodbye. This effort underscores the college’s commitment to embracing its Jewish community.
Reflecting Cultural Education
The mural also illustrates the educational programs offered by the United Jewish Education Board (UJEB) at CJC. These include a weekly Jewish Life class where students explore Jewish festivals, Shabbat traditions, and basic Hebrew. Additionally, the school runs a Hebrew Immersion Program three times a week, enhancing cultural learning.
CJC caters to a significant number of French families through its French Binational Program (FBP), represented in the mural with iconic symbols such as the Eiffel Tower. This program provides bilingual and bicultural education, pairing each class with both French and Australian teachers.
Funding for the mural came from the French committee and the library budget, reflecting a strong community effort to enhance the educational environment.
Community Pride and Student Engagement
During the unveiling, CJC principal Chris Chant expressed pride in the mural, stating, “We are very proud to launch and show to the public the first glimpse of our mural that’s been added to the library.” He highlighted the school’s long history, established in 1914, and the continual evolution of the institution to represent the diverse backgrounds of its students.
Chant emphasized the mural as a significant addition to the school’s identity: “It is a great reflection of who we are as a school, who we are as a community.”
A student also shared their enthusiasm at the unveiling, saying, “A big thank you to Shannon for painting this amazing mural because it brings light and colour to the library.”
CJC’s new mural not only enhances the library’s aesthetic but also serves as a powerful symbol of the school’s commitment to celebrating diversity and fostering an inclusive environment for all students.
