The Mining and Energy Union (MEU) has formally requested that billionaire industrialist Sanjeev Gupta convene a public Town Hall meeting for all stakeholders involved with the Tahmoor Colliery. This call comes as workers confront ongoing uncertainty, including unpaid wages and changing explanations from the company. The MEU asserts that the situation has persisted for months, leaving employees in a state of limbo.
Recent developments have exacerbated concerns among the workforce. Labour hire contractors at Tahmoor were notified that they would no longer receive payment, coinciding with RStar standing down more than half of the mine’s workforce. While Gupta has claimed to have secured a substantial funding package, payments to RStar have reportedly not been made, adding to the confusion and frustration.
Union Calls for Transparency and Accountability
Stakeholders have expressed dissatisfaction with the inconsistent information they have received in private discussions. According to Bob Timbs, President of the MEU’s South Western District, “We have had enough of the silence and private meetings where different people are told different things. Workers deserve straight answers. The billionaire who controls these operations should be fronting the people he made promises to.”
In its recent correspondence, the MEU has urged Gupta to clarify the actual status of the funding, provide timelines for resuming operations or exiting the site, and outline how contractors and workers will be compensated. The union requests that Gupta respond within five business days to address these pressing concerns.
The call for a Town Hall represents a broader demand for transparency amid rising tensions within the workforce. Workers are seeking reassurance that their rights and wages will be honored, particularly as the company navigates financial challenges. The MEU’s push for an open dialogue highlights the critical nature of communication between management and employees, especially in times of uncertainty.
As the situation at Tahmoor Colliery continues to unfold, the outcome of this request for a public meeting remains to be seen. The engagement of all stakeholders, including Gupta, is essential to restore trust and provide clarity in a turbulent environment for the workforce.
