Nostalgic Glimpses of Sutherland Shire from the ’60s to ’90s

A collection of historical photographs showcases the transformation of Sutherland Shire from the 1960s to the 1990s, highlighting key landmarks and community developments. This visual journey captures the essence of the region, reflecting both its natural beauty and the evolution of local amenities.

Woronora is prominently featured with images of the iconic Star Boatshed, originally built in 1946 by Arthur Makin and his daughter. The boatshed, a beloved community fixture, provided boat rentals to locals and visitors seeking to experience the scenic Woronora River. By 1995, the boatshed had changed hands several times, yet it continued to serve as a hub for water activities. Today, the site houses a café and offers canoe and kayak rentals, ensuring that the tradition of enjoying the river persists.

The historical significance of the Lugarno cable ferry is also highlighted, with photographs showing it in operation since its launch on July 12, 1961. The ferry replaced an older wooden punt and was constructed in Newcastle by Carrington Slipway Pty Ltd. Once completed, it was towed to Botany Bay before being transported upriver to its current location. The first ferry master, Albert Delardes, oversaw operations as the ferry became an essential mode of transport across the river.

The images from Audley in 1974 depict the picturesque setting where boating has remained a popular pastime within the Royal National Park. The boatshed seen in these images dates back to 1938, succeeding an earlier structure that had served the area shortly after the park’s establishment. As winter approaches, visitors to the park can witness the blooming of wildflowers along the numerous walking tracks, adding to the natural allure of the region.

Further development in the area included the opening of Engadine Court on July 10, 1990, inaugurated by then Shire President Doug McNeill. This neighbourhood shopping centre was designed to enhance access between the shopping strip along the Old Princes Highway and Caldarra Avenue. It featured a Franklins supermarket and 29 specialty shops, catering to the growing community. Although the motor registry that opened in 1991 was closed in 2020, a new Service NSW branch emerged in its place, continuing to serve local residents.

For those interested in exploring further historical images of the Sutherland Shire, additional resources are available online, allowing the community to reflect on its rich past and the changes that have shaped the area over the decades. The photographs not only serve as a nostalgic reminder but also highlight the enduring spirit of the region and its commitment to preserving its history.
