Queensland Rail’s Santa Steam Express Raises $20,000 for Charity

Dozens of families and train enthusiasts experienced a festive journey through Brisbane’s suburbs aboard the Santa Steam Express. This event, organized by Queensland Rail, successfully raised over $20,000 for Mater Little Miracles, an initiative aimed at improving outcomes for the most premature and seriously ill babies in Queensland.

The Santa Steam Express is part of celebrations marking Queensland Rail’s 160th anniversary. Hundreds of attendees gathered at Roma Street Station to witness the arrival of Santa and his elves on the heritage steam locomotive affectionately known as Bety. The sold-out event featured festive entertainment and three scenic journeys, transporting a total of 900 passengers throughout the day.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Mater Little Miracles, a program under the Mater Foundation. The funds will be directed towards enhancing care for families with babies in the Mater Mothers’ Hospital Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) located in South Brisbane.

Queensland Rail’s CEO, Kat Stapleton, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support. “We are thrilled to have raised over $20,000 for this deserving cause,” she stated. “We extend our thanks to Downer Group, which generously donated $10,000 to assist premature and sick babies.” The combination of ticket sales and donations culminates in a significant contribution to the charity.

“This Christmas-themed event has wrapped up a year of celebrations for Queensland Rail, which included steam train trips for our birthday in July and at this year’s Ekka,” Ms. Stapleton added.

The Mater Foundation Chief Executive, Andrew Thomas, highlighted the importance of the partnership between Queensland Rail and Mater Little Miracles. “Funds raised will support the purchase of a state-of-the-art ventilation system that gently aids the breathing of the tiniest babies in our NCCU,” Mr. Thomas remarked. “We couldn’t think of a better Christmas gift to support our NCCU babies and families, so thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Santa Steam Express.”

In a similar vein, Stephen Kakavas, Chief Operating Officer for Rail at Downer Group, expressed pride in contributing to such a vital cause. “Downer has a long history of supporting the communities in which we operate. We have been manufacturing trains in Queensland for more than 150 years and are proud to collaborate with Queensland Rail to impact the lives of some of its youngest citizens positively.”

The event successfully combined holiday cheer and community support, showcasing the spirit of giving during this festive season. With continued partnerships and initiatives, Queensland Rail and its collaborators aim to foster hope and joy for families in need.
