Ashvora Launches Albany Utsav: First Indoor Diwali Festival

Ashvora members Sri Mallela, Radha Mallela, Sushmita Subedi, Ritu Rawat and Sukh Grewal. Ashvora will host Albany’s first indoor Diwali event, Albany Utsav - Festival Under the Stars, at Manley Hall on October 25.

A new not-for-profit organization, Ashvora, is set to host Albany’s inaugural indoor Diwali festival, named Albany Utsav — Festival Under the Stars, on October 25. This event aims to support themes of hope, empowerment, and inclusion within the migrant community in Western Australia. The festival will take place at Manley Hall and promises a vibrant lineup of activities, including a three-course meal, Bollywood dancing, Indian classical and folk performances, art displays, a fashion showcase, and live music.

Ashvora is spearheaded by Asha Bhat, the chief executive of the Southern Aboriginal Corporation. Bhat emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and welcoming space for migrants, who often face isolation and barriers in regional communities. “As a migrant myself,” Bhat stated, “I know what it is like to face isolation, barriers and silence in regional communities. There is an unmet demand here as migrants contribute so much, yet too often they have no voice.”

The festival is designed to empower migrants holistically, helping them integrate into local society. Bhat added, “Our vision is to empower migrants holistically, to help them integrate, and to show that regional towns thrive when everyone is included. It is the first indoor Diwali event in Albany, a celebration where communities come together, where migrants are honoured, and where hope is turned into action.”

Celebrating Culture and Community

Member of Ashvora, Sri Mallela, highlighted that Albany Utsav is more than just a festival. “It is a demonstration of what happens when culture, community, and opportunity are nurtured together,” he explained. “It proves that regional towns can be inclusive, resilient and vibrant when we celebrate all who call them home.”

The event is expected to attract a diverse audience, fostering connections and understanding among various cultural groups. Tickets for Albany Utsav are available through Humanitix, marking a significant moment in Albany’s cultural calendar.

The initiative represents a meaningful step towards inclusivity and belonging for migrants in the area, showcasing the potential for regional towns to embrace diversity and thrive. With its rich array of activities and performances, Albany Utsav is set to be a memorable celebration for all.
