Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet Returns as Limited Edition Model

The iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class is preparing to make a comeback as a Cabriolet, marking its return after nearly a decade. Official “spy” photos released by the luxury automaker showcase the G-Class undergoing road tests in Austria, near the Magna Steyr facilities, where it will be manufactured alongside its four-door hardtop variant. Following these road tests, the G-Class Cabriolet prototype will be transported to Sweden for rigorous cold weather testing.

Although Mercedes-Benz has not disclosed a specific launch date, it is anticipated that the Cabriolet will be available in dealerships before the summer of 2026. The company has indicated that more information regarding this model will be shared “in due time.” Notably, Mercedes-Benz is designating the G-Class Cabriolet as a “special edition” model, hinting at a limited production run.

The first-generation G-Class Cabriolet was introduced in 1979 and remained in production until 2013. Since then, the only soft-top variant has been the exclusive 2017 Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet, which featured a twin-turbo V12 engine producing a remarkable 463 kW. In contrast, the upcoming Cabriolet will follow the second-generation G-Class design, which is currently available only as a four-door wagon.

The spy images reveal several design updates for the Cabriolet, including new rear quarter panels and a half-height swing-out tailgate that complements the folding soft top. The presence of a spare wheel on the tailgate, along with a visible rear axle, suggests that the prototype being tested is equipped with an internal combustion engine rather than the electric layout of the G580 EQ, which utilizes four motors.

In Australia, the G-Class lineup includes three drivetrain options: one petrol, one diesel, and one electric. The entry-level G450d features a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel straight-six engine combined with a 48V mild-hybrid system, which delivers a total output of 270 kW and 705 Nm of torque. At the top of the range sits the G63 AMG, powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo engine that produces an impressive 430 kW and 850 Nm. The G580, which incorporates EQ Technology, offers a unique driving experience with a total power of 432 kW and 1,165 Nm, thanks to its four motors.

As Mercedes-Benz focuses on the G-Class Cabriolet, it is also developing a smaller off-road model, informally referred to as the Baby G or Mini G. This new addition will feature a ladder-frame chassis similar to its larger counterparts, further expanding the G-Class family.

The return of the G-Class Cabriolet is generating excitement among automotive enthusiasts, with its blend of luxury and off-road capability promising to attract attention in the competitive market. As details emerge, the G-Class Cabriolet is set to reignite interest in this storied vehicle lineage.
