As the new year unfolds, many individuals reflect on personal goals and resolutions. For those behind the wheel, adopting a mindset of cooperation and safety can make a significant impact on road experiences. In a recent commentary, motoring enthusiast and editor, Olga de Moeller, shares her resolutions for 2024, focusing on the concept of “Team Driving” and a commitment to safer motoring habits.

Understanding Team Driving

One of the main highlights of de Moeller’s resolutions is the promotion of Team Driving. This concept encourages drivers to recognize other vehicles within a 25-meter radius as part of a collective journey rather than as competitors. Visualizing family members behind the wheel of different cars—a sibling in a small hatchback, a parent in a larger SUV—can foster a sense of community on the roads. The aim is to enhance mutual respect among drivers, which can lead to fewer accidents and a more enjoyable driving experience.

Addressing Distractions and Noise

De Moeller acknowledges the growing concern regarding distractions caused by bright digital billboards. According to the Australian Road Safety Foundation, such diversions are a leading cause of road accidents, resulting in thousands of injuries and fatalities each year. By committing to ignore these distractions, drivers can maintain focus on the road, thereby enhancing safety.

Another notable point in her resolutions involves the noise generated by motorcycles. Despite regulations under ADR83/00, which set limits on external vehicle noise, the practice of modifying motorcycle mufflers persists. De Moeller emphasizes the need for drivers to adapt to these realities while advocating for a more peaceful driving environment.

Safety Practices and Common Sense

The commitment to safe driving extends to practical measures, such as not stopping in the right lane at traffic lights to indicate a right turn. De Moeller expresses her fear of potential accidents, particularly at busy intersections like Stirling Highway and Princes Street in Mosman Park. She highlights the importance of making safer choices, even if it means taking a longer route.

Reflecting on motorcycle safety gear, she admits that while full compliance may be difficult, the intention remains to prioritize safety whenever possible. Additionally, she encourages drivers to embrace the warning systems in their vehicles, viewing alerts as valuable safety reminders rather than nuisances.

Community Engagement and Awareness

Another resolution includes assisting others who may need guidance on practical car maintenance, such as changing a flat tire. De Moeller recalls a recent encounter with a young woman who was unsure if she was allowed to film the process. This moment underscores the importance of sharing knowledge and building community awareness regarding vehicle safety.

De Moeller also raises concerns about the impact of loud music on driving. Citing a comprehensive meta-analysis of studies, she notes that high-volume music could increase driving speed, while calming sounds may improve safety. This awareness can lead to better decisions regarding in-car entertainment, ultimately contributing to safer roads.

Finally, she acknowledges the advancements in road management technology, such as the new Smart Mitchell Freeway Southbound. While initially skeptical, she recognizes that these innovations can facilitate smoother traffic flows and enhance driver awareness.

Embracing these resolutions can lead to a collective effort towards safer driving in 2024. By fostering a spirit of teamwork on the roads and committing to better driving habits, individuals can contribute to a more positive and secure motoring environment for everyone.
