The 2025 Razzie Awards recognized the year’s most critically derided films, with the sci-fi adaptation of War of the Worlds claiming multiple dubious honors. The film, which draws inspiration from H.G. Wells‘ 1898 novel, was awarded worst picture, worst screenplay, worst remake, worst actor for Ice Cube, and worst director for Rich Lee. The organizers of the parody awards remarked that the film “utterly destroyed H.G. Wells’ classic novel.”
The Razzies, a long-standing spoof of the Oscars, aim to highlight the most poorly received performances and productions each year. In a humorous critique, they described Lee’s direction as akin to being “maybe inspired by Ed Wood,” noting the film’s “goofy gimmick” and “hack dialogue.”
Other Notable Winners and Nominations
Another significant target at this year’s event was Snow White, a live-action remake of Disney’s beloved 1937 animated classic. This film garnered the award for worst supporting actor for all seven CGI dwarves and worst screen combo. The Razzies quipped that the film’s exorbitant budget and poor box office performance might have been “cursed by Walt himself for having ignored his dying wish for it never to be remade.”
Australian actress Rebel Wilson received the award for worst actress for her role in the action-comedy Bride Hard. Additionally, Scarlet Rose Stallone was recognized as worst supporting actress for her performance in the Western film Gunslingers.
Acknowledging Improvement: The Razzie Redeemer Award
A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Razzie Redeemer Award. This accolade is given to a past nominee who has since achieved significant success. This year, Kate Hudson received the honor for her critically acclaimed role in Song Sung Blue, where she stars alongside Hugh Jackman as a member of a Neil Diamond cover band. Hudson’s performance has earned her praise and nominations for several prestigious awards, including the Golden Globes and BAFTA Awards.
This recognition marks a notable turnaround for Hudson, who previously received several Razzie nods, including the title of worst actress for her role in the 2021 film Music, directed by Australian pop singer Sia.
According to the Razzie organization, over 1,100 voters from the United States and around two dozen other countries participated in the selection of this year’s winners. As the Razzies continue to entertain with their tongue-in-cheek approach to filmmaking, they remind audiences of the contrasting spectrum of cinematic achievements.
