At the age of 34, Corey Fawcett from Howlong has received a devastating diagnosis: terminal brain cancer. After experiencing severe migraines that led him to the emergency department of Albury Hospital on two occasions within three days, a CT scan revealed a brain tumour. Following this alarming discovery, he underwent surgery in Melbourne to remove the tumour, but the diagnosis confirmed that he faces either Stage 4 Glioblastoma or Stage 4 Astrocytoma, each associated with a life expectancy of just 12 to 18 months.
“The news was a shock to both me and my family,” Fawcett shared, reflecting on the moment he had to convey the difficult news to his extended family and friends. Since then, his life has been turned upside down. Fawcett has had to step away from his job, struggle with driving, and relearn basic motor skills, including the use of his hand, arm, foot, and leg.
The emotional and physical toll of his condition has prompted his close-knit family to pause their own lives to support him. They have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help alleviate the financial pressures associated with his medical treatment, travel, and everyday expenses. “I’m not eligible for any government assistance, and I don’t have any sick leave, so any help will go towards my mortgage, bills, travel, and treatment,” he explained.
The fundraiser has attracted support from family, friends, and even strangers, illustrating the strength of community during difficult times. “Difficult times bring family closer, and mine are a very close family,” he expressed. Fawcett has been heartened by the messages of love and support he has received, which have provided him with some comfort amid his struggles.
Despite the challenging prognosis, Fawcett remains resolute in his determination to fight. He is optimistic, citing his age and the success of his surgery as reasons to maintain hope. “I want to keep doing the things I love—fishing, working, and spending time with my dog and my family,” he stated. “I’m stubborn and determined to live, and I’m fighting this, not dying tomorrow.”
