The ACT Government has granted conditional approval for the redevelopment of the Calvary John James Hospital in Deakin, Canberra, following an extensive evaluation process. This ambitious project, with an estimated cost of $500 million, aims to modernize healthcare facilities and improve patient care within the region.
Key Features of the Redevelopment
The redevelopment plan includes substantial upgrades across several departments, featuring updated maternity wards, intensive care units, general and rehabilitation beds, as well as ten operating theatres and endoscopy facilities. Additionally, a gym dedicated to rehabilitation will be incorporated into the new design. The upgraded facility will focus heavily on surgical areas, introducing two new theatres, raising the total to ten.
Although the overall bed count will decrease from 130 to 98, Calvary has clarified that not all existing beds are currently in use, reflecting an increase in day surgeries. The hospital plans to maintain its operations uninterrupted during the construction phase, which is set to begin in mid-2026.
Investment and Community Impact
According to Luke Sams, Chief Executive of Calvary ACT NSW, the redevelopment represents an exciting opportunity to set a “new benchmark for healthcare in the ACT.” The project aims to enhance the hospital’s capabilities while also improving the overall patient experience.
The redevelopment is being carried out in collaboration with Barwon Investment Partners, which has owned the hospital building and land since 2018. The firm is also investing in additional facilities in the area, including a specialist medical centre within the Peter Yorke Building.
Alongside the hospital upgrades, construction will begin on a 98-place childcare facility adjacent to Calvary Hospital. This facility will be operated by Insight Early Learning, a national childcare provider with a network of 11 centres across Australia. The new childcare centre, located just a minute’s walk from the hospital, aims to support local families and staff by providing convenient care options.
This redevelopment marks a significant step towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure in Canberra, reflecting a commitment to meet the evolving needs of the community while ensuring high-quality medical services are accessible. As the project moves forward, stakeholders anticipate it will not only improve facilities but also positively influence the local economy through job creation and increased healthcare offerings.
