Family Urges Resumption of Search for Missing Diver Off WA Coast

The family of a diver who went missing while searching for Christmas crayfish off the coast of Bunbury is calling for the search efforts to be resumed. The man, identified as John Smith, has not been seen since he entered the water on December 1, 2023. Despite initial search operations conducted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the family believes that more could be done to locate him.

Search operations began shortly after Smith was reported missing. Rescuers utilized helicopters and vessels to comb the waters near Bunbury, a coastal city located approximately 175 kilometers south of Perth. Over the past week, the search has faced challenges due to adverse weather conditions, which have hampered visibility and made the waters unpredictable.

In a heartfelt statement, Smith‘s family expressed their desperation and urged authorities to continue the search. “We cannot give up hope,” they stated. “Every minute that passes is critical. We want to see more boats and divers in the water. Our family needs closure.”

The family has also highlighted the community’s support, with many locals joining in the search effort. They have organized gatherings to spread awareness and encourage further action from local authorities. “It’s heartening to see so many people coming together,” a family spokesperson remarked. “This is not just about one man; it’s about community and support.”

As the search operations remain suspended, the family is working closely with local officials to understand the next steps. They have requested a meeting with the AMSA to discuss the possibility of resuming search efforts and to explore additional resources that can be deployed.

The community of Bunbury has rallied around the missing diver’s family, with local businesses and residents contributing to fundraisers aimed at supporting the ongoing search. Many have expressed their desire to see a thorough and persistent effort to locate Smith.

While the official search has paused, family members and volunteers plan to continue their own efforts in the area. They believe that every moment is vital and are determined to keep the search alive.

The case of John Smith has resonated widely, prompting discussions about safety measures for divers in the region. Many locals have called for increased awareness and education regarding diving practices, especially during the peak crayfish-catching season.

As the family awaits further updates, they remain hopeful that their loved one will be found. They continue to encourage anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in such critical situations.
