Mildura’s Historical Exhibition Showcases Local Fruit Heritage

An exhibition titled “Peeps into the Past” will run from October 12 to 18, 2023, showcasing the rich agricultural history of Mildura, Australia. Organized by the Mildura and District Historical Society and curated by local historian Judy Hyde, the event will highlight the significance of fruit production in the region, particularly focusing on the Railway Department of Victoria’s promotional efforts.

The exhibition features historical materials and artifacts related to the local fruit industry, including a unique display of fruit bags marked with the phrase “Stored Sunlight.” This label was used by the Railway Department of Victoria at various railway fruit stalls, symbolizing the region’s commitment to quality produce. The bags contain impressions of both oranges and lemons, underscoring Mildura’s reputation as a key player in Australia’s citrus market.

Hyde emphasized the importance of this exhibition in preserving the agricultural heritage of Mildura. “Our fruit industry has shaped the community and boosted the local economy for over a century,” she stated. The exhibition aims not only to inform visitors about the past but also to inspire future generations to appreciate and continue the legacy of fruit production in the area.

The event promises to be a significant cultural occasion for local residents and visitors alike. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with historical documents, photographs, and other memorabilia, all reflecting the evolution of the fruit industry over the past century. The exhibition is hosted at the Mildura Rural City Council Libraries, making it accessible to a wide audience.

Mildura’s climate and fertile land have long supported its agricultural endeavors, making it a vital contributor to Australia’s overall fruit production. By showcasing this history, “Peeps into the Past” not only celebrates the achievements of local farmers but also educates the public on the historical context of the region’s agricultural advancements.

The exhibition is free to enter and aims to attract families, history enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the local culture. Organizers encourage community participation and hope to foster a deeper understanding of Mildura’s agricultural roots through this engaging display of historical significance.
