As the festive season approaches, families in Perth are increasingly including their pets in Christmas portraits, with the local FurBaby doggy daycare leading the way. The centre’s popular Santa Paws sessions have seen a surge in demand, allowing families to capture memories with every member of their household—be it dogs, cats, or even the occasional pony or bird.
Owner Shari Lovreta Fiorentino notes that the trend reflects the evolving role of pets in family life. “Now pets are not just outside; they live inside with us, they’re on couches, they sleep on beds, they go to kids’ sporting events. To have a family photo without them just doesn’t feel right anymore,” she explained. This year, the centre is even expecting a visit from an eagle, showcasing the diverse range of pets participating in the sessions.
Among the regulars at Santa Paws are the Puccio family, who have been capturing memories with their husky, Wolfie, since 2015. “It’s become our Christmas tradition. It wouldn’t feel like Christmas without our annual photo here,” said Shen Puccio. For the family, including Wolfie in their holiday portraits is essential. “She’s been part of our family for so long now that it would be strange to have a family photo without her in it.”
Their first portrait was taken just before the birth of their youngest child, Marley. “Looking back at that photo now, knowing he’s in next year’s photo as a baby in my arms, and then older each year alongside Wolfie, is incredibly special,” she reflected.
Wolfie, now 11.5 years old, has changed over the years. “We’ve gone from her being a very lively pup, jumping up to Santa’s chair, to literally now having to lift her up carefully to sit next to Santa, as she is too old to jump up herself,” Shen added.
This year’s sessions feature a newly designed Christmas set, moving away from the traditional reds and greens. “We’ve gone non-traditional this year for something fun and different,” Ms. Fiorentino noted, describing the vibrant backdrop of pinks, purples, and blues. “Coming to us is very non-traditional as it is, so we wanted the backdrop to match that.”
With the festive spirit in full swing, pets are taking centre stage in Perth’s holiday celebrations, and FurBaby is helping families create lasting memories that include every beloved member, furry or not.
