A childcare centre in Gregory Hills, located in Sydney’s south-west, has been closed following an investigation into allegations of serious safety concerns. The New South Wales (NSW) Regulatory Authority announced the immediate shutdown of Jenny’s Kindergarten and Early Learning Centre, stating that multiple incidents raised “unacceptable risk” levels for children in its care.
As part of the decision, the childcare provider’s licence has been suspended. The NSW government is moving forward with over 30 proposed changes to childcare legislation, aimed at enhancing safety standards across the sector. Sources familiar with the situation indicated to the ABC that children at the centre were allegedly exposed to significant harm and hazards.
The NSW Regulatory Authority released a statement indicating that further comments would not be made while investigations are ongoing. It underlined the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that immediate action was necessary to protect children.
In a response, a spokesperson for Jenny’s Kindergarten and Early Learning Centre confirmed that the centre had been ordered to close due to the suspension of its service approval. The spokesperson expressed intentions to appeal the suspension to the Department of Education, asserting that the centre prioritizes child safety and adheres to appropriate care and education guidelines.
“We apologise for the inconvenience and concern this suspension will create for families,” the spokesperson stated. “We want to clarify that there have been no serious injuries at the centre. There have been no assaults, nor any allegations of sexual misconduct by staff.”
The spokesperson acknowledged that recent issues involved non-compliance with safety check-in and reporting guidelines, as well as a failure to meet mandatory reporting requirements. Upon discovering these lapses, the supervising staff member was terminated.
“We are confident that we will reopen once we resolve this issue with the department through appeal,” they continued. The centre also noted that the suspension does not affect its other locations.
In light of the ongoing investigation, Jenny’s Kindergarten and Early Learning Centre stated that training sessions and meetings have been organized to ensure all staff comply with stringent care and safety policies. As the matter is under appeal, further details have not been disclosed.
The situation underscores the heightened scrutiny on childcare facilities and the critical importance of maintaining safety standards for children.
