The local community in Buff Point will have the opportunity to influence the future of their dog park, with two potential relocation sites now under consideration. Mayor Lawrie McKinna announced that the decision will be significantly guided by resident feedback, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in this process.
“We’ve identified two suitable sites and now we’re asking the community to let us know which option they prefer,” McKinna stated. He explained that relocating the dog park will enable the Council to optimize the use of available space for recreational and sporting activities while ensuring the park remains a safe and enjoyable environment for residents and their pets.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
The proposed relocation aligns with the draft Dogs in Open Space Action Plan, which was developed with input from local residents. “I’m pleased that we are working together with locals to design a new dog park that will reflect the needs of residents,” McKinna added.
Director of Community and Recreation Services Melanie Smith noted the current dog park’s popularity among local dog owners but expressed excitement about the possibilities a new location could bring. “A new location could offer improved access to public toilets, more room for dogs to play, and a more welcoming environment for pet owners to connect and enjoy the outdoors,” Smith remarked.
This initiative also supports the broader vision for Buff Point Oval. Over the past three years, the Council has invested approximately $2 million in upgrades to the site. These improvements include new drainage, irrigation, lighting, and a modern amenities building, alongside plans for a formalized car park. Smith highlighted that these enhancements aim to meet the growing demands of local sporting clubs and the community.
