Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael fronted the media during the 2024 Diggers & Dealers Mining Forum.

David Michael, the Mines Minister of Western Australia, addressed industry stakeholders at the annual Diggers & Dealers mining conference in Kalgoorlie on August 7, 2023. His remarks focused on reinforcing the Cook Government’s commitment to the mining sector, which remains pivotal to the state’s economic agenda.

Reaffirming Commitment to the Mining Industry

In his speech, Minister Michael emphasized the mining sector’s critical role in driving economic growth and job creation across Western Australia. He noted that the sector contributed significantly to the state’s economy, generating billions in revenue and providing thousands of jobs.

“The mining industry is not just a vital component of our economy; it is the backbone of our community,” Minister Michael stated. He highlighted how the sector supports numerous local businesses, enhances community development, and plays an essential role in the transition to a greener economy.

The Diggers & Dealers conference, recognized as one of the industry’s premier events, provided a platform for Minister Michael to connect with mining executives and stakeholders. His presence underscored the government’s willingness to engage with the industry and address its challenges.

Addressing Industry Challenges and Opportunities

During his address, Minister Michael acknowledged the ongoing challenges facing the mining sector, including regulatory hurdles and environmental concerns. He assured the audience that the Cook Government is committed to working collaboratively with industry leaders to streamline processes and enhance sustainability practices.

The minister also pointed out that Western Australia remains a global leader in mining, with the state rich in mineral resources such as lithium, gold, and iron ore. He noted that the government is keen on attracting further investment to ensure the sector’s continued growth.

In a statement reflecting the government’s strategy, Minister Michael remarked, “We are focused on creating a regulatory environment that supports innovation while ensuring we protect our environment for future generations.” His comments resonated with industry leaders, many of whom are looking for assurance as they navigate the complexities of sustainable mining practices.

As the conference continues, attendees will likely engage in discussions on emerging technologies and their application within the mining sector. The integration of these technologies is seen as crucial to enhancing productivity and reducing the environmental impact of mining operations.

Minister Michael’s address at the Diggers & Dealers conference not only reaffirmed the government’s support for the mining industry but also set the tone for ongoing dialogue between the government and industry stakeholders. His commitment to fostering a collaborative environment is expected to bolster confidence among investors and further strengthen Western Australia’s position in the global mining arena.
