The redevelopment of the historic Perth Concert Hall has reached a significant milestone with the awarding of the main works contract to ADCO Constructions. The project aims to rejuvenate the heritage-listed venue, enhancing its facilities and preserving its distinctive character. Major construction is set to commence in early 2026, following essential structural work completed this year.
The comprehensive redevelopment package will transform various aspects of the Concert Hall. This includes the creation of new public internal spaces and foyers, modern food and beverage outlets, upgraded backstage facilities, and dedicated administration and rehearsal rooms for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, the auditorium will see a complete overhaul with new seating, while the northern forecourt and surrounding landscaping will be revitalized.
Investment and Stakeholder Support
The total investment for the redevelopment amounts to $173.3 million. This includes $127.3 million from the State Government, $12 million from the Federal Government, $4 million from the City of Perth, and $30 million from Woodside through the Resources Community Investment Initiative. A further allocation of $23 million is included in the Cook Government’s Mid-Year Review to enhance connectivity in the precinct.
Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I am excited to see the redevelopment move into its next phase. Restoring and revitalising Perth’s world-class Concert Hall will enhance the experience for both visitors and performers.” She emphasized the importance of modern arts infrastructure in fostering a vibrant creative economy in Western Australia.
Federal Member for Perth Patrick Gorman also highlighted the significance of this redevelopment. “For more than 50 years, the people of Perth have enjoyed the arts at the Perth Concert Hall, and this milestone is great news for art lovers and performers in our city and beyond,” he remarked. Gorman noted that this project is part of a broader initiative in which the Australian Government is investing $532.7 million in various projects across the city.
Historical Significance and Future Prospects
Originally designed by architects Jeffrey Howlett and Don Bailey, the Perth Concert Hall opened its doors on 26 January 1973, marking it as the first concert hall built in Australia after World War II. The upcoming redevelopment aims to preserve the venue’s world-class acoustics while enhancing its capacity to host a wide range of performances.
Local MLA John Carey remarked on the project’s importance, stating, “It’s great to see this significant milestone reached on a project that will breathe new life into the iconic Perth Concert Hall.” He noted that the government has made substantial investments in various projects that will enhance the vibrancy of the inner city, including the Concert Hall redevelopment, the WACA redevelopment, and a new inner-city primary school.
As the Perth Concert Hall enters this new phase of redevelopment, stakeholders and the community await the positive impacts it will bring to the cultural landscape of Western Australia.
