A new selection of grape tomatoes is set to enhance gardens and salads with the introduction of three varieties in the “Galaxy Suite.” Bred by Phillip Griffiths, an associate professor at Cornell AgriTech, these tomatoes are available for preorder through High Mowing Organic Seeds and will be delivered in spring 2026 for planting.
The new additions include “Green Nebula,” “Stargazer,” and “Cosmic Pink.” Each variety boasts unique characteristics. Green Nebula is a juicy, pear-shaped tomato that turns translucent yellow-green when ripe. Stargazer presents a pale bright orange hue, shaped between a pear and a grape, and offers a distinct fruity flavor. Cosmic Pink, on the other hand, is an elongated pink tomato known for its meaty texture and disease resistance, making it a top choice for flavor enthusiasts.
Griffiths, who has bred a total of nine varieties for the Galaxy Suite, noted the growing demand for novelty among gardeners. “Gardeners always want something new, and the first thing they look for is tomatoes,” he stated. The diverse colors and flavors of the Galaxy Suite tomatoes are resonating with a wide audience, including home gardeners, organic growers, and retail markets.
Interest is also rising among chain stores such as Wegmans, Sprouts Farmers Markets, and Ark Foods, a plant-based food company. Griffiths began his tomato breeding work in 2005, initially focusing on filling gaps in his research on brassica family vegetables, including broccoli and cabbage.
The early 2000s saw a surge in smartphone usage, allowing consumers to share food images online. Griffiths believes this trend has contributed to increased engagement in the food system. “The Galaxy Suite plays into where the engagement of consumers in the food system is going and developing in the technological age,” he remarked.
The aim of the Galaxy Suite is not solely to boost economic gains but to make engaging and fun foods more accessible. Griffiths emphasized the importance of encouraging broader participation in the growing and consumption of vegetables, particularly tomatoes. With these new varieties, gardeners and consumers alike are invited to explore the colorful world of grape tomatoes.
