Professor Montelle Honored with Prestigious Astronomy Medal

Professor Clemency Montelle, Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, has made history by becoming the first recipient outside the UK to receive the prestigious Agnes Mary Clerke Medal. This award, given by the Royal Astronomical Society, recognizes significant contributions to historical research in astronomy and geophysics. Montelle will officially receive the medal in March 2026.

The medal honors Montelle’s exceptional research into the history of astronomy, particularly her innovative work on Indian mathematical astronomy and various other pre-modern astronomical traditions. Her scholarship has focused on the intricate connections between these traditions, illuminating the contributions of different cultures to the field of astronomy.

Montelle’s research is characterized by her deep understanding of mathematical techniques, ancient languages, and cultural contexts. By addressing long-standing biases in historiography, she has introduced new methodologies for interpreting complex historical sources, including Sanskrit astronomical tables. Her approach combines rigorous analysis with a commitment to uncovering previously overlooked mathematical advancements from centuries past.

Montelle holds a PhD from Brown University and possesses proficiency in several ancient languages, including Ancient Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, and Classical Arabic. Her work includes locating rare manuscripts worldwide, translating their technical content, and revealing significant historical achievements in mathematics and astronomy.

In addition to her research, Montelle is noted for her leadership in the field and her dedication to fostering a global community of historians of astronomy. She has actively supported fellow researchers and students, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and collaboration in advancing scholarship.

Her recognition with the Agnes Mary Clerke Medal holds personal significance for Montelle. “I am delighted and honoured to receive the Agnes Mary Clerke Medal,” she stated. “It is especially meaningful to be recognized for work that explores the deep historical roots of astronomical knowledge across cultures, and for the collaborative work, mentorship, and community-building that sustain the field and make this scholarship possible.”

Montelle’s contributions extend into the realm of digital humanities, where she has developed software for analyzing historical numerical data. Additionally, she has created specialized typesetting platforms that facilitate the digital representation of ancient scripts and mathematical notation, further bridging the gap between historical research and modern technology.

This accolade not only highlights Montelle’s individual achievements but also underscores the importance of diverse perspectives in the field of astronomy. Her work continues to inspire a deeper understanding of the rich tapestry of astronomical history, encouraging future scholars to explore the interconnectedness of global traditions.
