Josh Allen to Miss Entire Preseason as Bills Prepare for Regular Season

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen will not participate in the preseason for the first time in his career. During a news conference on August 31, 2023, head coach Sean McDermott announced that Allen will sit out the third and final preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 2, 2023. Allen had already missed the previous two games, marking a significant shift in his preparation for the upcoming season.

Coach McDermott emphasized the importance of protecting his star quarterback as the Bills gear up for the regular season. “You’ve got the reigning MVP, and I feel that he’s shown to this point that he’s in a good spot,” McDermott stated. He highlighted that Allen is “on schedule and he’s looked good,” indicating confidence in Allen’s readiness despite the lack of preseason action.

Allen’s absence from the preseason does not stem from injury concerns; he has participated fully in training camp, missing only one team period. His involvement in the team’s joint practice with the Chicago Bears last week showcased his fitness and ability to lead the team. This decision reflects a strategic approach by the coaching staff, prioritizing Allen’s health and performance over preseason game experience.

Entering his eighth season, Allen is coming off a remarkable year in which he won his first MVP award. In the previous season, he recorded the fewest turnovers of his career with just eight and was sacked only 14 times. As the Bills look to contend for the NFL title, ensuring the quarterback’s readiness is crucial.

McDermott mentioned that decisions regarding other first-team players for the upcoming game remain pending. This cautious approach is indicative of the team’s broader strategy to minimize risks ahead of a demanding regular season schedule. The Bills will aim to build on their previous successes, with Allen at the helm, as they pursue their championship aspirations.

With the start of the regular season approaching, all eyes will be on how this decision impacts Allen’s performance and the Bills’ overall strategy moving forward.
