The Moorabool Council has formally requested an explanation from the Victorian Government regarding a significant cut to funding for sport and recreation infrastructure. In a report presented at the council meeting on October 1, 2023, council officers revealed that they had reached out to the state government to address a reduction of $20 million in the allocated budget for 2025–26. This reduction is particularly concerning as local demand for sports and recreational facilities continues to grow.
The letters sent by the Moorabool Council emphasize the vital role that sport and recreation infrastructure plays in the community. Alongside the request for clarification on the funding cuts, the council urged the government to consider a substantial increase in future funding aimed at both new and upgraded community sports facilities. Additionally, the council called for the establishment of dedicated growth funds for fast-growing councils, which includes Moorabool and other peri-urban municipalities.
The council’s advocacy follows a notice of motion brought forward by Councillor Rod Ward on July 2, 2023. This motion highlighted recommendations from the Legislative Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee. The committee’s findings suggested that the state should create specific growth funds for councils experiencing rapid development, underscoring the need for timely investment in essential sports infrastructure.
In response to the concerns raised, a spokesperson for the Victorian Government reaffirmed the state’s commitment to sports. “Victoria is the sporting capital of the nation, a reputation built on the strength of local clubs and athletes,” the spokesperson said. The government has invested over $2.4 billion since 2014 to enhance facilities and increase participation opportunities across the state.
The spokesperson added, “We want more Victorians to get involved in the sports they love. It keeps us healthy, builds friendships, and strengthens local communities.” This statement reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to prioritize sports and recreation at the community level.
To facilitate the development of community sports infrastructure, the government is encouraging local councils to submit proposals for consideration through existing and future funding opportunities. The Moorabool Council has indicated that it will continue to advocate for increased funding and that it will share any responses received from the government with its councillors.
As the Moorabool community continues to grow, the demand for enhanced sports and recreational facilities becomes increasingly urgent. The outcome of the council’s advocacy and the state government’s response to the funding cuts will play a crucial role in shaping the future of local sports infrastructure.
