Panthers Sign Taylor Moton Through 2027; Vikings Eye Thielen Trade

The Carolina Panthers have solidified their offensive line by extending the contract of right tackle Taylor Moton through the 2027 season. The team announced this significant move on Friday, revealing that Moton, 31, will receive a two-year deal worth $44 million, with $40 million guaranteed, according to the Win Sports Group and ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

In related developments, the Minnesota Vikings have expressed interest in acquiring wide receiver Adam Thielen, 35, from Carolina. Thielen, who is in the final year of his contract, previously spent ten seasons with the Vikings before joining the Panthers in 2023. The Vikings are seeking depth at the wide receiver position as they navigate the early season without Jordan Addison, who is suspended for three games, and Jalen Nailor, who is currently dealing with a hand injury.

The timing of these discussions comes as the Panthers are managing a crowded wide receiver corps themselves. Thielen is one of three starters, alongside Tetairoa McMillan, a first-round pick in 2025, and Xavier Legette, a first-round selection in 2024. The competition also includes Hunter Renfrow, a 2021 Pro Bowler looking to rebound after missing last season due to ulcerative colitis, which led to his release by the Las Vegas Raiders.

Moton, drafted in the second round by the Panthers in 2017, was initially projected to count $31 million against the salary cap this season. Before the contract extension, he reflected on the importance of his tenure in Carolina, stating, “Obviously I want the years to continue, but if it’s my last year here, I want it to be my best year.” His emotional connection to the team and the city was evident as he emphasized the sacrifices made on the field: “All the blood, all the sweat, all the tears, right? Being a Panther means a lot to me.”

These moves signal a strategic focus for both teams as they look to strengthen their rosters ahead of the upcoming season. The Panthers aim to maintain a robust offensive line while the Vikings seek to bolster their receiving options, highlighting the dynamic nature of player negotiations in the lead-up to the season.
