Rhinos Charge into Grand Final with Hat-Trick from Vardanega

The Manildra Rhinos secured their spot in the upcoming grand final after a convincing 32-12 victory against the Canowindra Tigers on August 23, 2024. The match, held at Jack Huxley Oval, highlighted the Rhinos’ skill and determination, as well as a touch of fortune that saw young lock Connor Vardanega achieve his first career hat-trick.

Vardanega’s impressive performance included a pivotal try that was aided by a fortunate bounce from a high kick. “It was pretty much just a miracle bounce really,” he remarked after the game. His three tries significantly contributed to the team’s success, marking a key moment in his burgeoning career.

Rhinos’ Winning Culture and Team Spirit

Manildra’s victory was not just a result of individual brilliance; it reflects the team’s strong culture and commitment to success. Vardanega, who joined the Rhinos from the Orange Hawks during the off-season, expressed his admiration for the club. “The boys have been building over the last few years and set themselves up for success,” he noted. This win also marks the Rhinos’ sixth consecutive appearance in the grand final, a testament to their sustained performance.

The Rhinos’ success was mirrored in the league tag competition, where the Rhinettes triumphed over the Cowra Magpies with a score of 16-0, securing their fourth straight league tag decider. This demonstrates the depth of talent and competitive spirit present within the club.

The match against Canowindra showcased a thrilling start, with the Tigers initially taking the lead through a dazzling 90-metre try by halfback Ryan Clarke. However, the Rhinos quickly responded. A mistake from a kick allowed veteran player Joey Lasagaviabu to score, leveling the game shortly after.

Decisive Moments in the Match

As the first half progressed, Vardanega opened his account, but Canowindra’s Ron Lawrence leveled the score again just before half-time, with both teams heading into the break at 12-12. The second half began with Canowindra showing promise, yet it was Manildra who eventually found their rhythm. A strategic play saw Lawrence Fogg break through the defense, scoring and shifting the momentum firmly in Manildra’s favour.

Vardanega’s second try followed soon after, effectively securing the match for the Rhinos. To cap off the win, halfback Will Petrie added another try, sealing the victory at 32-12. “It’s my first one out here, so pretty exciting,” said Vardanega, as he reflected on his achievement.

Looking ahead, the Rhinos will now prepare to face the winner of the match between the Oberon Tigers and Molong Bulls, who are set to compete on August 24, 2024. With their sights set on the grand final, the Rhinos are focused on maintaining their health and fitness to ensure a strong performance in the decider.
