Community Questions North East Link’s “Dodgy” Statement on Sinkhole

A statement released by the North East Link over the long weekend has drawn significant criticism from local media and residents alike. The update, published on Facebook, has been described as “completely dodgy” by Jacqui Felgate, a host on the radio program 3AW Drive. This reaction follows concerns regarding a sinkhole that appeared earlier this month at AJ Burkitt Oval in Heidelberg.

During her program, Felgate questioned the timing and content of the update, labeling it “sneaky.” She emphasized the need for transparency from government officials, urging the responsible minister to reassure residents that their safety is not at risk. “I think it’s well and truly time for the minister to front up and tell residents that they have nothing to worry about,” Felgate stated.

Local resident Lydia, who frequently runs in the area, expressed her frustration over the lack of communication from authorities regarding the sinkhole incident. “It’s insane, it’s crazy,” Lydia remarked, echoing the sentiments of many community members who feel neglected in the wake of this development.

The sinkhole, which has caused a significant portion of land to be inaccessible to the public, has raised alarms among local residents. Many are calling for more detailed information and consultation from the North East Link project team. Residents believe that understanding the underlying causes of the sinkhole is crucial for their safety and peace of mind.

The North East Link project, designed to improve connectivity in the region, has faced scrutiny over various issues, including environmental and infrastructural concerns. As the community grapples with these ongoing challenges, the demand for clear and honest communication from officials continues to grow.

The January 2024 statement and the surrounding discussions highlight a critical moment for the North East Link project. Residents are seeking not just answers but also accountability from those in charge. As the situation develops, the local community remains hopeful for an informative response that addresses their concerns and restores confidence in the ongoing project.
