Chinese technology company Vivo has introduced its latest product, the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition, a direct competitor to Apple’s Vision Pro. Priced at approximately 10,000 yuan (around $1,400), this new device aims to address two primary criticisms of Apple’s offering: high cost and discomfort during extended use.
The Apple Vision Pro, priced at $3,400, has been described by CEO Tim Cook as “tomorrow’s technology today.” Despite its innovative features, the device’s weight of over 600 grams has led to reports of discomfort among users after wearing it for more than an hour. Many have noted that the headset can feel excessively hot and heavy, diminishing the overall user experience.
Vivo’s Approach to Design and Functionality
In contrast, the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition weighs just 398 grams and has dimensions of 83 mm in height and 40 mm in thickness, making it 26% smaller than the industry average. This design aims to enhance comfort, allowing users to wear the device for longer periods without discomfort.
The new headset features an operating system called OriginOS Vision, designed for seamless and intuitive user interaction. Users can transition from traditional “tap-through-screen” methods to “move-and-pinch” gestures, enhancing the overall user experience. With advanced capabilities including 1.5° high-precision eye-tracking and a vertical tracking range of 175°, the Vivo Vision offers responsive controls that cater to a variety of uses.
The device is equipped with dual Micro-OLED screens that deliver 8K binocular resolution, 94% DCI-P3 color coverage, and a color accuracy of DeltaE<2, which rivals that of professional cinema monitors. This technical specification positions Vivo’s offering as a compelling alternative for those seeking high-quality visuals.
Market Position and Availability
Despite its promising features, the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition faces challenges in competing with Apple. Its lack of integration within the Apple ecosystem may limit its appeal, particularly among users who are deeply embedded in Apple’s suite of products. Furthermore, reports suggest that the device will primarily be available in China, with demo sessions scheduled at 12 authorized stores in major cities, allowing potential buyers to experience the headset before making a purchase.
As the competition in the augmented reality and spatial computing market heats up, Vivo’s latest launch highlights the ongoing demand for innovative technology that balances performance with user comfort. While the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition aims to carve out its niche, it remains to be seen how it will fare against established players like Apple.
