UPDATE: Australian trail marathon runner Hannah McRae is set to honour her late friend, local athlete Michael Henderson, during the 50km Duval Dam Busters event in Armidale this weekend. This poignant race, known as the “Hendo Hustle,” pays tribute to Henderson, who tragically passed away during a triathlon in 2021.
As McRae prepares to tackle the challenging course, she reflects on the profound impact of her friend’s legacy. “Hendo was a much-loved member of the running and triathlon community,” she stated. “Running the 50km Dam Busters is even more special to remember him.” The event, which takes place on October 7, 2023, serves as both a competitive challenge and a heartfelt memorial.
McRae, who now resides in Hobart, has consistently made her mark in the Australian trail scene. Earlier this year, she represented Australia at the World Mountain Running Championships in Canfranc-Pirineos, where she faced grueling conditions over an 82km course. Despite not achieving her desired results, she described the experience as “amazing,” highlighting the significant elevation changes and technical terrain.
Before participating in the World Championships, McRae secured impressive finishes at other major events, including a top 10 placement at the Lavaredo Ultra Trail and a podium finish at the Buffalo Stampede. “I train six, sometimes seven days a week,” she shared, emphasizing her commitment to balancing her running career with her personal life.
As she gears up for the Dam Busters, McRae carries the memory of Henderson with her, drawing motivation from the bond they shared. “I feel like he’s sort of told me to get on with it,” she remarked, noting that the event’s dedication to Henderson adds a layer of significance to her participation.
For aspiring runners, McRae stresses the importance of pursuing events that ignite passion. “You perform best when you’re really invested,” she advised. “Whether it’s a local race or an off-route adventure, do what you love, and the progress will come.”
The Dam Busters event not only celebrates endurance but also the spirit of community and remembrance. As athletes like McRae continue to push their limits, they inspire others to honor their loved ones, creating a legacy that transcends competition.
Stay tuned for updates as the race unfolds this weekend, and witness how McRae and her fellow athletes pay tribute to those who have inspired them on their journeys.
