UPDATE: Rising star Bailey Sweeny has just made headlines with his impressive debut in the Super2 category, securing his first podium finish during the fourth round at Queensland Raceway this weekend. The 22-year-old racer from Batemans Bay has reached new heights in his racing career, clocking speeds of up to 300 km/h.
Sweeny, who began racing go-karts a decade ago, has quickly ascended through the ranks. “I’ve been racing Super2 this year, and we’ve had some ups and downs. For a rookie campaign, it’s expected,” Sweeny stated following his podium finish. “But we have definitely had some highs, like last round with my first podium.”
During the intense competition at Queensland Raceway, Sweeny qualified in fourth place, battled fiercely for the lead, and ultimately finished in third. This achievement is significant, as Super2 is known for its challenging nature, making his podium finish a remarkable milestone in his rookie year.
“Super2 is like the reserve grade of footy where all the drivers cut their teeth with hopes to get promoted to the main game in V8 Supercars,” Sweeny explained, highlighting the competitive environment designed to develop young talent.
The 2025 season marks a pivotal moment for Sweeny as he joins the Blanchard Racing Team’s Dunlop Super 2 Supercars team. With a background that includes numerous state and national go-kart victories, and an impressive Rookie of the Year title in the TCR Australia Championship, Sweeny’s career trajectory is on a fast track.
As he reflects on his journey, Sweeny credits his father for his unwavering support, stating, “Dad’s still a big supporter, and he comes to pretty much every test day and every race. I don’t think he imagined that it was going to happen that way back then, but I wouldn’t change anything.”
Fans and racing enthusiasts are encouraged to follow Sweeny’s journey as he aims to transition into the main series of supercars in the coming years. “I’m lucky enough to be on a Super2 team that also has a main team, so the goal is definitely to progress to the main team in V8 Supercars,” he added.
As Sweeny’s rookie season continues, racing fans are eager to see how this talented young driver will further develop and compete in the Supercars Championship. Stay tuned for more updates on his remarkable journey.
