Bega Brawl Accused Benjamin Phillips Faces Extended Custody

URGENT UPDATE: Benjamin Charles Phillips, 40, accused of assaulting a police officer during a violent altercation in Bega, will remain in custody for an additional two weeks. This decision was announced in Bega Local Court on November 25, 2023, as his solicitor has requested more time to gather essential medical documents and character references necessary for a bail application.

The charges against Phillips include two counts of assaulting a police officer causing actual bodily harm and two counts of hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of their duty. These serious allegations arose from a chaotic brawl in the car park of Bega Vinnies on November 11, which resulted in seven arrests and left an officer injured.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Phillips was unable to enter pleas due to “medical reasons.” His solicitor informed the court he is currently at a clinic within the South Coast Correctional Centre. The case has been adjourned until December 9, when it is expected that Phillips will enter pleas and a formal bail request will be submitted.

The implications of this case are significant, as it highlights ongoing issues regarding public safety and police interactions in the region. Residents of Bega are urged to stay informed about this developing situation, as it continues to unfold in the local court system.

Stay tuned for updates on this urgent matter as the next court date approaches, and the community grapples with the aftermath of this violent incident.
