UPDATE: For the first time in two years, the city of Bethlehem has illuminated its Christmas lights, marking a poignant moment for residents and clergy despite heavy rain on December 9, 2023. This ceremony represents a glimmer of hope amid the economic turmoil caused by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has devastated the city’s traditional religious tourism.
During the event, community members gathered at Manger Square, where the atmosphere was filled with a mix of excitement and solemnity. The ceremony began with the Palestinian national anthem and included a moment of silence to honor the victims of the Gaza conflict, where more than 70,100 people have been killed since the start of 2023. This stark reminder of loss underscores the urgent need for peace.
Local merchant Jack Tabash, who has faced significant challenges due to the downturn in tourism, reopened his shop solely for the lighting ceremony after being closed for two years. “When there are no tourists, many people suffer,” he stated, reflecting the economic struggles faced by many in the area. Tabash emphasized, “If there is peace, it is better for us, for Palestinians and for Jews too, for Israel as well.”
Among the attendees was Pierre Demarole, a French Dominican who recently moved to Jerusalem for studies. He expressed the significance of celebrating Christmas in Bethlehem, stating, “For Christians, it is essential to support anything that reminds us that Christmas celebrates the birth of the Prince of Peace.” Demarole hopes the festival’s lighting “offers a bit of hope and shows the world that we can do other things in the Holy Land besides fight and wage wars.”
Despite the ongoing challenges, the ceremony brought together Palestinians from both Christian and Muslim communities, highlighting a brief return to normalcy in a city long known for its religious significance. As shops, restaurants, and hotels remain shuttered, residents cling to the hope that the current truce will lead to an influx of visitors and much-needed economic revival.
As Bethlehem lights up for Christmas, the world watches closely. Will this event be a turning point for the region? The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the future of both visitors and residents, as they strive to rebuild and restore their beloved city.
