Bookish Withdraws from Writers Festival in Bold Support of Free Speech

UPDATE: In a stunning move, Bookish, the key book supplier for the Bendigo Writers Festival, has announced their withdrawal from the event in solidarity with writers protesting a controversial code of conduct regarding antisemitism. This decision comes as more than 50 of the 92 scheduled speakers have pulled out, including renowned authors such as Clare Wright OAM and Dr Randa Abdel-Fatteh, highlighting significant unrest in the literary community.

The festival’s code of conduct has faced backlash for its perceived restrictions on free speech, especially regarding discussions surrounding the ongoing war in Gaza. Wendy Bridges and Wendy Sattler, owners of Bookish located on Hargreaves Street, expressed their support for the writers’ decision, stating, “After we spoke with the authors about our stance, they were understanding and supportive of our decision to withdraw as bookselling partner.”

Despite the financial repercussions of this boycott, which they described as a “massive financial blow to a local small business,” the owners are determined to champion the work of the authors who have withdrawn. “We have already rearranged our shop displays to put these books on show,” they confirmed, emphasizing their commitment to supporting local and national writers.

The protest has garnered overwhelming support from across the country, with messages pouring in from authors, customers, and human rights organizations. “We are confident we made the right choice,” the owners added, underscoring their unwavering belief in free expression.

While the future of Bookish’s participation in upcoming writers’ festivals remains uncertain, they assured their community that they would continue to foster a love for reading, despite the challenges posed by the current situation. “The Bendigo Writers Festival is our biggest weekend of the year, and we felt heartbroken. But we know that this will open doors to positive opportunities for us to engage with big-hearted people and showcase the work of the withdrawing authors,” the owners stated.

In a related event, Bookish proceeded with the schools’ day on August 15, 2023, aiming to cultivate children’s interest in reading, which they described as “in our very DNA as booksellers.”

As this situation unfolds, the literary landscape in Bendigo and beyond faces a pivotal moment regarding the balance of free speech and artistic expression. Bookish remains committed to navigating these challenges while supporting the courageous voices of the literary community.
