UPDATE: The Bridgewater Bowls Club is making headlines as it celebrates 90 years of community spirit and camaraderie this December. In a thrilling match against South Bendigo on Saturday, Bridgewater triumphed with a score of 83-75, showcasing the club’s competitive edge and strong team unity.
This milestone season is particularly special, as players ranging from their early 20s to their 80s come together to honor a legacy that began in the 1935-36 season. Club vice-president Nick Saunders, who has dedicated 17 years to Bridgewater, emphasizes the emotional connections forged through the sport. “It’s not just about the game; it’s the friendship and wellbeing that the club provides,” Saunders stated, reflecting on the club’s role in his life following personal loss.
Bridgewater, a well-loved club in Bendigo’s bowling community, is preparing for a grand celebration on December 20, 2023, at noon in their clubrooms. This event will mark their rich history and the bonds that have formed over nearly a century of bowling. The club’s commitment to inclusion is evident as they field both division five and division two teams, fostering an environment where friendships flourish alongside competition.
Saunders shared how this club has supported him during tough times, stating, “It’s a great social outlet for farmers who may not see a lot of people during the week.” The club, initially founded with 40 members, has remained a pillar of support, even through two significant floods in 2011 and 2022.
The Bridgewater team, affectionately known as “Dad’s Army,” features seasoned players like John Fagan and Rob Smith, who continue to inspire younger members. As the current division five team sits proudly atop the ladder, anticipation builds for the possibility of breaking a premiership drought that has lasted since 2011-12.
In addition to capturing victories, the club also nurtures its history. Player Barb Catto has been actively researching for the upcoming 90th anniversary, demonstrating the club’s commitment to preserving its legacy. “Barb has done a power of work researching the club… she has done a fantastic job,” remarked skipper Glenn Mangan.
As the celebration approaches, the club is a testament to the power of sport in uniting generations and fostering a sense of belonging. The community is invited to partake in this significant milestone and reflect on the friendships and memories that have been created through lawn bowls.
