UPDATE: In a remarkable show of courage and determination, Canberra mum Robyn Smith has successfully completed the City to Surf marathon, raising nearly $20,000 for Inherited Cancers Australia. This event took place on August 13, 2023, and saw 90,000 runners braving the rain over a challenging 14-kilometre course from Sydney to Bondi Beach.
Robyn’s mission to promote awareness of inherited cancers included running bare-chested, prominently displaying her double mastectomy scars. This procedure was a life-saving measure she underwent in 2019 after being diagnosed with the BRCA2 gene mutation, which significantly heightens the risk of breast cancer.
Robyn expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support she received during the race. “The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive,” she stated, noting that many spectators high-fived her and offered encouragement. “One woman even made me a beautiful ‘Go Robyn’ banner featuring scars.”
The Canberra mother of three, who also works as the Programs and Advocacy Manager for Inherited Cancers Australia, hopes this fundraising effort will continue to grow. “I believe the funds raised will help sustain our organization, but we still need more support, especially from government or corporate sponsors,” she emphasized.
The engagement surrounding Robyn’s run has been extraordinary, with her story being featured in over 10 different media outlets. “I can’t even keep track of it all,” she said, reflecting on the immense coverage and support.
Robyn’s journey through the City to Surf was not just about personal achievement; it was about raising awareness for inherited cancers and the importance of genetic testing. She met other participants, including a runner in a gorilla costume, who also aimed to raise funds for cancer research.
Donations can still be made to Inherited Cancers Australia through Robyn’s fundraising page, ensuring that the vital work of the organization continues. As Robyn noted, “It’s about breaking societal norms and bringing attention to a cause that affects so many.”
This inspiring event serves as a reminder of the power of community and the importance of advocating for health awareness. Robyn Smith’s story is not just a testament to her strength; it is a rallying call for continued support for those impacted by inherited cancers.
Stay tuned for more updates as Robyn continues her mission to empower others through her courageous example.
