Elderly Couple Killed in Fatal Crash at Queensland Intersection

URGENT UPDATE: A tragic crash at a rural intersection in northeast Queensland has claimed the lives of two elderly individuals. A man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s died following a collision between their Toyota Landcruiser and a Subaru towing a caravan at approximately 11:45 PM on Thursday. The incident occurred at the intersection of Kennedy Hwy and Malanda Atherton Rd, about 90 minutes southwest of Cairns.

Emergency services arrived swiftly at the scene but were unable to save the couple. Reports indicate that the occupants of the Subaru were unharmed in the crash. The loss has sparked an outpouring of grief and concern within the community, as locals reflect on the dangers of the intersection.

In a local Facebook community group, residents expressed their sorrow and frustration. One user noted, “That can be a busy intersection and oncoming traffic approaches fast. Afternoon sun can also be a hazard. I’m heartbroken.” Another commenter suggested, “Perhaps it’s time for some traffic lights. There are too many accidents happening.”

Calls for improved safety measures at the intersection have intensified following this incident. “They need to put in an extra two lanes… so people can pull out of there and just keep going,” another resident advocated. The community is rallying for action to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of drivers in the area.

Local authorities have not yet confirmed whether they will implement changes to traffic management at the intersection. For now, the community mourns the loss of the elderly couple and grapples with the urgent need for improved road safety measures.

As investigations continue, residents are urged to stay vigilant on the roads. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly at high-traffic intersections.
