Fighting Fishies Triumph Over Dragons in Thrilling 16-12 Upset

BREAKING: In a thrilling qualifying final, the Dubbo CYMS fought back from a 12-point deficit to secure a stunning 16-12 victory over the Mudgee Dragons at Apex Oval on August 17. With the score tied, it was Chapman who delivered the decisive blow, scoring a critical try in the corner after a penalty put CYMS right on Mudgee’s try line. “That was an absolutely massive moment,” Chapman declared, emphasizing the team’s resilience in bouncing back from a difficult start.

This win is particularly significant for CYMS, who have struggled against Mudgee in previous encounters, including a painful 68-6 loss earlier this season. “It’s a massive win and we get that extra week to rest up,” Thurston remarked, highlighting the importance of this victory for their championship hopes.

The Fishies’ triumph preserves their chances for a home grand final, which would also benefit Dubbo’s under-18s team, who won their qualifying final against Forbes on the same day. “It would be massively important to get us back here in front of our home crowd,” Chapman noted, as the atmosphere at Apex Oval played a vital role in both teams’ performances.

On the opposite end, the Mudgee Dragons faced disappointment, particularly concerning officiating decisions that they felt impacted the game. Frustration was evident, especially for Priest, who expressed his dissatisfaction with the match’s intensity and officiating. Captain Tom Lawson urged his team to regroup, stating, “It’s simple, boys, we win from here on out.”

As the dust settles on this exhilarating encounter, all eyes will be on CYMS as they prepare for their next challenge, hoping to maintain their momentum. The victory not only uplifts the team but also invigorates their loyal supporters, who are eager for more thrilling matches ahead.
