UPDATE: The vibrant cocktail scene in Perth is about to explode as the world’s most esteemed mixologists descend upon the city for Plateful Perth’s Cocktail Weekend on October 20-21, 2023. This two-day event will showcase a stellar lineup of international and local talent at some of Perth’s top bars, including Terrarium, Mechanics Institute, Bar Lafayette, and the Ritz Carlton’s Songbird.
This weekend, Songbird will collaborate with Singapore’s renowned Sago House, featuring guest bartenders Naz Zurmi and Ronan Keilthy on Friday evening. Expect “good cocktails and good vibes,” promises Songbird venue supervisor Kristen Sly. “It’s going to be an awesome opportunity to showcase cocktails from both Australia and Asia,” she added.
In a unique twist, Terrarium and Mechanics Institute will join forces with Sydney’s Bar DEMO and A Little Cooler, respectively, while Bar Lafayette teams up with Hobart’s Rude Boy. They will serve up Aussie-inspired cocktails using native ingredients, aiming to transport patrons to Tasmania without the long flight. “It’s almost like we’re transporting people to Hobart without needing to take a flight for six or seven hours,” said Marco Manca from Bar Lafayette.
Perth’s cocktail community is thriving, and, according to Sly, demand for craft cocktails is on the rise. “We sell so many espresso martinis and spicy margaritas,” she noted, emphasizing the city’s creativity in cocktail-making. Manca echoed this sentiment, stating that cocktails are “more than just a liquid.” He expressed excitement about raising community expectations of cocktail quality, saying, “I just want to bring a little more to the community. Our mission is to make classic cocktails with a twist.”
