UPDATE: Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) has announced a significant transition in its leadership as four board members, including outgoing chair Diane James, depart after pivotal contributions. The announcement came shortly after the board’s latest meeting, intensifying focus on the organization’s future direction and ongoing projects.
The board has played a crucial role in navigating challenges like floods and the COVID-19 pandemic since February 2019, offering essential guidance and support. The departure of board members highlights a bittersweet moment for G-MW, as these leaders have been instrumental in shaping the organization during a transformative period.
Diane James, who joined G-MW in 2018, leaves a lasting legacy with notable achievements, including a 10 percent price reduction for customers. Under her stewardship, G-MW improved financial performance, customer engagement, and initiated a transition to net zero emissions. Her leadership has set a strong foundation for the organization moving forward.
The contributions of fellow outgoing members are equally commendable. Patrick McNamara, as chair of the Project Control Group, ensured the Connections Project delivered 429 gigalitres of water savings on time and within budget. Jonathan Koop, chair of the Risk, Audit and Finance Committee, bolstered G-MW’s financial governance and risk management, fostering trust with oversight partners. Lastly, David McKenzie, with extensive water industry experience, guided the organization to a more commercially aware service planning approach.
While the departure of these key figures raises questions about G-MW’s future, five new board members have been appointed, bringing fresh perspectives and expertise. Justin Hanney has been appointed as the new chair, leveraging his extensive regional knowledge from previous roles, including chief executive of Regional Development Victoria. He is joined by Rob McMillan, Sue Oddie, Liz Ryan, and Paul Weller.
G-MW’s managing director, Charmaine Quick, expressed her gratitude for the outgoing members’ dedication and looks forward to collaborating with the new board. This transition marks a pivotal moment for G-MW, as the organization prepares to tackle future challenges and enhance its service offerings.
