Knights and Gladiators Storm Newcastle for Epic Medieval Festival

UPDATE: The Newcastle Medieval Festival is underway at Foreshore Park, attracting an estimated 16,000 attendees this weekend. Knights, dragons, and gladiators have gathered in Newcastle for a spectacular celebration of medieval culture, making this year’s event a must-see.

Just announced, the festival features thrilling combat displays, crafting demonstrations, and historical reenactments, all set against the backdrop of the vibrant park. Event organizer Richard Henry expressed astonishment at the massive turnout, stating, “The turnout has been huge, enormous, unbelievable.”

The festival, which kicked off on July 15, 2025, has turned Foreshore Park into a living history experience. Attendees are immersed in the sights and sounds of the medieval era, complete with the aroma of smoldering fires and the clang of swords echoing through the air. Many festival-goers arrived in elaborate costumes, with an estimated one in three attendees dressing for the occasion.

Among the highlights is the popular buhurt competition, where competitors don up to 30 kilograms of armor and wield three-kilogram steel swords in an arena battle. Tom, a participant who traveled from Canberra, shared his excitement: “The competitors don’t ‘stab’ their weapons but strike each other with full force.” The intense competition showcases the skill and bravery of the participants, fully protected by their heavy gear as they battle for glory.

The festival continues to draw visitors from across the country, with attendees arriving from as far away as South Australia and Queensland. The event promises more entertainment, displays, and food stalls throughout its second day on Sunday. Tickets are still available for those eager to experience the thrill of the medieval fair.

As the sun sets, the excitement is palpable, with festivities set to conclude on Sunday with a presentation ceremony for buhurt competitors. This event not only highlights the rich history of the medieval period but also fosters a sense of community and celebration among attendees.

Don’t miss out on this unique experience—head to Foreshore Park for one more day of medieval magic, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments!
