UPDATE: A significant police operation in Brimbank and Melton has just concluded, resulting in the arrest of 37 individuals linked to burglary, car theft, and reckless driving. The operation, dubbed Operation Momentum, unfolded over four nights, from November 26 to 29, leading to over 170 offences detected.
During the operation, authorities recovered 14 stolen vehicles and impounded an additional 13 for various driving violations. An extensive check of more than 2,000 vehicles was conducted, alongside the clearance of 19 outstanding warrants.
Among the apprehended suspects were three teenagers caught in a stolen vehicle armed with fuel jerry cans, balaclavas, and weapons. Police spotted the suspicious white Ford Everest at approximately 3 AM on November 28 on Taylors Road. The vehicle, driving without headlights and lacking a front registration plate, attempted to evade police. Following a tire deflation operation, authorities tracked it to Woburn Close in Kealba, where the three occupants fled on foot.
A thorough search of the vehicle revealed the stolen status and the dangerous items inside. Police later discovered a mobile phone discarded by one of the suspects, which indicated they were allegedly planning to ram a commercial property and set it ablaze. The two 17-year-old boys from Wyndham and an 18-year-old male from Strathtulloh now face serious charges, including theft of a motor vehicle and conspiracy to commit arson. The younger suspects have been remanded in custody, while the older suspect has been bailed for a future court appearance.
In a separate incident, police apprehended two men—aged 27 and 35—who were allegedly driving a stolen Nissan Navara at high speeds, contraflow on Station Road in St Albans. The men fled on foot after abandoning their vehicle but were quickly arrested after a brief pursuit.
Another alarming episode occurred in Melton West when three men were caught driving an unregistered Holden Commodore just after 1 AM on November 28. A search of their vehicle uncovered several knives and drugs, raising concerns about escalating crime in the area.
Detective Senior Sergeant Nick Di Mieri emphasized the operation’s success in preventing further crimes, stating, “A number of those arrested were allegedly on their way to commit more crimes, and Operation Momentum put a stop to this.” He assured the community that despite being conducted overnight, police presence was substantial.
As police continue to ramp up efforts to combat crime in the region, community members are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Those with information should contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or visit their website at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
