URGENT UPDATE: Melton has been officially declared one of 25 COPD hotspots in Australia, as revealed in a new report from health advisory firm Evohealth. This alarming designation highlights the escalating crisis surrounding Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a debilitating lung condition responsible for over 7,600 deaths annually nationwide.
The report, titled ‘The Change that can’t wait: Reducing the human and economic burden of COPD in Australia’, underscores the urgent need for action as it estimates that 53,000 hospital admissions each year are linked to COPD among Australians aged 45 and older. This pressing health issue costs the Australian healthcare system a staggering 1.67 billion AUD each year and accounts for 268,000 bed days in hospitals.
The data points to an alarming increase in the prevalence of COPD, with projections indicating that the number of Australians living with the disease could surge from 526,000 to over 843,000 by 2050. In Melton alone, there are an estimated 608 severe cases of COPD, a statistic that highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions.
Evohealth managing director Renae Beardmore emphasized that COPD disproportionately affects communities facing socioeconomic disadvantages. “COPD rates are more than three times higher in these areas, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience highly inequitable outcomes,” Beardmore stated. “They are nearly five times more likely to be hospitalized due to COPD compared to non-Indigenous Australians.”
The report outlines five critical recommendations for federal, state, and territory governments aimed at improving COPD management and outcomes. Key measures include increasing the use of spirometry in primary care for early diagnosis, strengthening partnerships to align with clinical care standards, and enhancing programs that optimize treatment transitions.
As communities brace for the impact of this disease, the call for action is clear. The time to address COPD is now, as the health and economic burdens continue to escalate.
