UPDATE: Ken Keele, a beloved postman in Melton, is set to retire after an impressive 30 years with Australia Post. His final delivery is scheduled for Friday, October 10, 2023, marking the end of an era for the community he has served since July 1995.
As his retirement approaches, Keele expresses mixed emotions about leaving a role that has defined his life for three decades. “There’s a hell of a lot of those people who … you get to know over the years,” Keele shared in a heartfelt statement. His interactions with residents have been the highlight of his career, emphasizing the personal connections he has fostered.
Throughout his time as a postman, Keele has experienced both challenges and heartwarming moments. He recalls instances where community members came to his aid when he faced difficulties on his route. “I’ve broken down and had people drive me into town… I’ve had people pull me out,” he said, reflecting on the support he received from locals.
Starting his career in mail delivery came as a transition from distributing orange juice, a job that became unsustainable due to a sales tax. “I’m pulling my bloody hair out because I’ve got two young kids at school,” he recounted, noting that an advertisement in a local paper led him to his new path.
Over the years, Keele expanded his delivery routes to include Rockbank, Exford, and Toolern Vale, even delivering mail to an army barracks. He fondly remembers the unique experiences, such as leaving mail in a 44-gallon drum at what was once a sheep station in Eynesbury.
In addition to his interactions with people, Keele has encountered a variety of wildlife, including a memorable moment with an emu approaching him as he delivered mail. These experiences have enriched his time as a postman, making it more than just a job.
To inform the community of his upcoming retirement, Keele has sent a personal letter to those on his mail route, expressing gratitude for their companionship over the years. His departure will undoubtedly leave a void in the hearts of many who have come to know him.
As Ken Keele prepares for his final run, the Melton community reflects on the impact he has made through his dedicated service. His story is a testament to the importance of connection and the human element in everyday roles.
Stay tuned for updates as we follow Keele’s farewell and the community’s response to the end of his remarkable tenure.
