UPDATE: The iconic Merimbula Classic, a hallmark of Australia’s water sports scene, will celebrate its 43rd edition from November 27 to 30, 2025. This event, which has evolved dramatically since its inception in 1981, showcases the rich history of surfing and windsurfing along the stunning Far South Coast of Australia.
As one of the founding figures, Henry Jones reflects on the transformative nature of the surfboard, stating, “It’s an age-old thing of almost being a baptism. You’re getting in that water, and when you come out, you always feel better than when you went into it.” Jones’ passion for the ocean stemmed from his early life experiences, including time spent at the beach with his babysitter and the inspiration he drew from the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, where he first encountered the revolutionary Malibu surfboard.
The Malibu board changed everything, allowing teenagers like young Henry to surf with newfound confidence. “Before that, we used ‘toothpick’ boards that were finless,” Jones recalls. The modern surfboard opened the coastline for exploration, leading surfers to discover new beaches and destinations, from local spots to far-flung locations like Indonesia and Hawaii.
The Merimbula Classic began as a windsurfing competition, spearheaded by a group of surfers eager to embrace the wind and waves of the region. “Instead of just packing up and going home when the wind came up, we discovered we could surf all day,” Jones noted. This competition has grown significantly, attracting enthusiasts and competitors from around the world.
In a strategic move, Jones and his fellow surfers positioned the event between major competitions in Sydney and Torquay. “The contest just kept getting bigger,” he said. Sponsorship from brands like Mambo and later Raging Bull Surf elevated the event’s profile, cementing its reputation as one of the best competitions of its kind.
The Merimbula Classic has continually adapted to new trends in water sports, showcasing wave sailing, kitesurfing, wing and foil surfing, and SUP surfing. As the event approaches its 43rd iteration, it remains a celebration of the sport and a testament to the evolution of surfing culture.
Mark your calendars for this thrilling event, which promises to deliver not only fierce competition but also a vibrant community spirit. The Merimbula Classic is more than just a competition; it’s a tribute to the enduring connection between surfers and the ocean.
Stay tuned for more updates as the event draws near, and prepare to celebrate a legacy that has shaped the surfing community for over four decades!
