New Study Reveals Romans Brought Cats to Britain 1,900 Years Ago

BREAKING: A groundbreaking new genetic study has confirmed that the cats lounging on British sofas today are descendants of felines brought to Britain by the Roman legions nearly 1,900 years ago. This urgent discovery sheds light on the intricate history of domestic cats, previously thought to have originated in various regions including ancient Egypt and early Turkey.

The research, which analyzed DNA from 87 cats spanning a remarkable 10,000 years, including 70 ancient specimens, reveals that modern domestic cats trace their lineage back to a distinct population in North Africa around 2,000 years ago. These cats traveled across the vast Roman Empire’s road networks, significantly influencing feline populations throughout Europe.

According to the study’s authors, “Since the Roman Imperial era, cats more genetically similar to present-day domestic cats were spread across Europe from a distinct north African population.” The earliest known evidence of these cats dates back to a feline discovered in Mautern, Austria, dating between 50 BC and 80 AD.

This swift dispersal of cats, often alongside Roman soldiers, marks a significant chapter in the history of human-animal relationships. Professor Jonathan B. Losos, an evolutionary biologist at Washington University in St. Louis, stated, “The ancient DNA records a quick spread of these domestic cats throughout much of Europe, often in concert with the Roman military, appearing in Britain around 100 AD.”

In a striking find, researchers identified a cat remains from Fishbourne, England, coinciding perfectly with the timeline of the Roman conquest, highlighting the historical significance of these “whiskered witnesses.”

Additionally, the research reveals a fascinating detour: domestic cats reached Sardinia and Corsica approximately 1,000 years before they appeared on the mainland, forming an isolated wildcat colony still present today, closely related to Moroccan wildcats.

This study is part of the ongoing Project Felix, aimed at unraveling the complex history of cat domestication. Professor Losos noted, “The study is part of an ongoing project, Project Felix, which also aims to tackle other outstanding questions concerning cat domestication. Ever sphinx-like, cats give up their secrets grudgingly.”

As this research gains attention, it raises intriguing questions about the role of cats in human history and their migration patterns. The findings are expected to spark discussions among historians and animal lovers alike, emphasizing the deep-rooted connection between humans and their feline companions.

Stay tuned for more updates on this fascinating study and its implications for our understanding of the domestication of cats worldwide.
